Wood & privacy

Wood Fencing:
styles & options.

The finished look comes from the details: the top line, picket arrangement, visible posts, trim and the way gates meet the fence. Bring a photo of a style you like, or describe the privacy you need. We’ll talk through the design and the property before narrowing the scope.

Choose the look. Understand the layout.

Privacy is only part of the decision. Compare the board arrangement, top profile, view from both sides and the way the design continues through a gate.

Style images are design references. Availability, dimensions, colors and suitability are confirmed for your project.

Stockade privacy

A continuous vertical-board look for the backyard. Compare the board spacing, finished side and top line.

Board-on-board style illustration
02

Board-on-board

Overlapping vertical boards create a layered appearance. Review both faces and the proposed lumber in your estimate.

Cap-and-trim privacy style illustration
03

Cap-and-trim privacy

A defined top cap and trim frame the fence. Discuss post details, corners and how the finish continues through gates.

Shadowbox style illustration
04

Shadowbox

Alternating boards give the fence depth from either side. Compare the view at an angle when deciding how much privacy you need.

Crossbuck privacy style illustration
05

Crossbuck privacy

Diagonal accents add a more detailed face to a privacy fence. Bring the desired pattern and which sides should show it.

Semi-private cap and trim style illustration
06

Semi-private cap and trim

Spaced boards with framed edges balance an open appearance and a defined boundary. Confirm the openings for your intended use.

Horizontal shadowbox style illustration
07

Horizontal shadowbox

Horizontal boards and an alternating arrangement create a layered design. Review the spacing and supporting frame together.

Horizontal semi-privacy style illustration
08

Horizontal semi-privacy

Visible spaces between horizontal boards keep the boundary more open. Consider sightlines from the places you use most.

Horizontal privacy

A horizontal board pattern offers a different visual rhythm from traditional vertical fencing. Agree on board gaps, posts and trim.

Pointed picket style illustration
10

Pointed picket

A classic pointed top for an open boundary. Discuss picket spacing, height and a coordinating walk gate.

Dog-ear picket style illustration

Dog-ear picket

Clipped board corners soften the top profile. Choose the spacing and finished height around the yard’s purpose.

Post and rail

An open framework for defining space. Ask about wire infill if containment is part of the plan.

01

Boards, rails and posts are separate decisions

The visible boards are only one part of the scope. Ask which lumber, support posts, rails and fasteners are included, along with any cap or trim details. If you prefer cedar or treated wood, identify that preference early and confirm material availability in the written proposal.

02

A straight-looking fence still follows a real property

Discuss changes in ground level, corners, retaining features and drainage routes before settling on the layout. Compare how the chosen construction meets the ground and what clearances remain. A design photograph is useful inspiration, but your yard determines the actual transitions and gate locations.

03

Plan the finish and future repairs

A natural appearance, stain and paint create different finishing scopes. Ask what preparation and finish are included, how the selected product is applied and what care guidance comes with it. When repairing an older fence, review the condition of surrounding supports and the visual difference between new and weathered boards.

Style and board arrangement

Compare the same height, board layout, top detail and finished face.

Lumber and supports

Identify the selected boards, rails, posts and any separate trim.

Gate construction

Include opening width, support needs, framing and hardware.

Removal and finishing

Specify old-fence removal, access and any staining or painting.

Before we get started

A few good questions.

Do you build custom wood gates?

Yes. Share the opening, desired style and how you use it. We can discuss a wood gate that fits the surrounding fence.

Can you match part of an existing wood fence?

Send close-up and wider photos. Matching depends on the existing dimensions, condition and material availability; the proposed match should be confirmed before work begins.

Should I repair or replace my wood fence?

The answer depends on the posts, rails, boards and how widespread the damage is. Photos help start the conversation, but the condition of the structure matters more than appearance alone.

Which wood fence style should I choose for privacy?

Start with the sightlines you want to change. Compare side-by-side and overlapping-board layouts, and view more open styles from an angle rather than only straight on. Share the places where privacy matters most so the design discussion is specific to your yard.

Can the fence follow a sloped yard?

Send photos of the full fence line and any changes in level. We can discuss the layout, bottom clearance and gate positions for the selected construction. The solution needs to fit the actual ground rather than assume every section can be treated the same way.

Is staining included with a new wood fence?

Include your finishing preference in the inquiry and ask for it to be stated in the estimate. Do not assume staining or painting is included simply because the design reference shows a finished fence. Preparation, product and timing should be agreed for the actual work.
